Furnishing Your Apartment

Congratulations

You’ve managed find the perfect apartment in the perfect location for the right price. You’ve had the odds stacked against you since you decided to get on the property ladder and you’ve done it, a place of your very own. Now all you have to worry about is furnishing it, damn. Fear not though, this is the easy part all you need to do is buy a sofa, a bed, a dresser, a wardrobe, a desk, a dining table, chairs and everything else in between that will make your house a home.

Furnishing your home is never easy, there are a lot of decisions to make but this is the fun part. This is where you get to be a painter, an artist if you like. You get to take a blank canvas made of bricks and mortar and turn it into a masterpiece. A bachelor pad, a family home, a couples dream apartment or a young professionals palace. You can be as outrageous or as conservative as you like, but of course, as always, it depends on your budget.

Figuring Out Your Budget

Figuring out how much money you have left over from your initial budget for actually acquiring your house will be the most important equation you do when looking to furnish your pad. It doesn’t have to bee the biggest sum in the world; in fact this is your chance to actually save money.

When it comes to the furnishings of your new place what you’ll really be paying for is quality. You can furnish your apartment on a shoestring budget if you like - just don’t expect the things you buy to last more than a year. When it comes to upholstery and furniture you can pay the earth for a beautifully bespoke, handmade, solid oak coffee table from Italy. Or you could go down the local flea market and pick up something for $15 that will do exactly the same job – the difference is quality. Figuring out how much you have to play with and what kind of furnishings you want in your property will depend on the size of this budget.

What Do You Want And What Do You Need?

When you’ve figured out your budget you can begin to differentiate between what you want to have in your apartment and what you actually need in there. You may want the $2000 bookshelf with the inbuilt TV stand that spans the whole feature wall of your living room, but it’s probably better to get yourself a bed first. It’s great that you get to furnish your own place and truly make it your own, but don’t get carried away. Think about the practicalities first of all before you start getting all misty eyed and flashing your American Express card all over the place.

Think about a place to sit, a place to eat and a place to sleep. Then, and only then can you really afford to start to think about the aesthetics of the place, how you want the place to feel as well as look. If you have the budget, then you can start thinking about the extra toys and perks that go along with having your own place eg: stereo, surround sound, high def television and a games console to go with it.

Scrap Book Ideas

If you’ve not caught the interior designer bug and are struggling for ideas of how to furnish your flat then there are plenty of places online to get a little inspiration. A number of social media sites have sprung up across the web which have been designed for those that love to collect and collate their ideas. These online scrapbooks, likePinterest, are great for giving your imagination a little boost. From boutique chic to classical design these online pin boards are full of ideas to help get your imagination into gear and help you create the perfect home.

The Finishing Touches

It can often be the little finishing touches that make a house a home; the welcome mat, refrigerator magnets and personal bits that really let you know that you’re home. Of course the big things help, getting a big comfy sofa for you to relax on and a bed to sleep in need to be your first priority, but after that let your personality shine through. Family pictures and your own personal touches can really make the place feel like your own. Once you’ve finished it’s time to do what every home owner does best – relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
