My purpose in writing this book is to place before them simple exercises
It explaining things and exercises, I have striven to play bare what is very much in my heart and in inviting your attention to what i deem important, I may perhaps have bored you with endless commands and pleadings. But I hope to be pardoned for it all, for I have done it with the best of intentions, and this book should be understood and used by my brethren still young in age and learning. My purpose in writing this book is to place before them simple exercises with solid iron dumbbells, the same which I have been practicing these many years, to lead them to a correct way of performing them and to help them build their physique and health, so as to fit them for healthy citizenship and parenthood. This is the one services I can offer to my fellowmen. In physical education, there are a few royal roads, clear, straight, and without pitfalls. The stylist and the ill -equipped instructor can, of course, show feats of strength which, with little benefit to health, vigor and delude the pupil whom they affect to train.
The modes of training with the solid dumbbells are as varied as the individual tastes of the cultured
Physical training should be simple and effective . It should also be complete in scope. Let me not go into research to find out when, where, how and who originated it. Here it is, a system well founded and ripe with age and widely practiced all the world over today. The modes of training with the solid dumbbells are as varied as the individual tastes of the cultured. Without any exception, every cultured who practices with dumbbells has at least a few particular exercises, which he claims either to be his own creation or asserts to be very important. Without a regular practice of them along with the other exercises, a weak spot or two will, he says, remain for ever in the finished physique. With due respect to the distinction and inventive capacity of each cultured, it is not possible to include and illustrate all such exercises, are too numerous and varied.
