15 food products containing maleic acid that could damage the kidneys exposed
15 food products from Taiwan were banned by health authorities in the Philippines. The products were tested to contain maleic acid, a harmful element. The maleic acid which could harm the kidney was added to the food without approval.
The Food and Drug Administration in its advisory dated June 6 said that even the host country Taiwan has suspended the sale and distribution of such questionable products.
The FDA said in same advisory that continuous consumption of maleic acid could destroy the kidneys.
The FDA came to know of this unauthorized contamination through Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority which reported the matter after conducting tests on the products.
The hot products are: 1) Hong Tapioca Starch, 2) Redman Black Tapioca Pearl, 3) Sun Right Indica Rice Powder, 4) Top 1 Tapioca Pearls, 5) Tea World Tapioca Starch Ball, 6) Unbranded Starch Ball, 7) Ding Long Tapioca Pearls, 8) Sun Chi Noodles, 9) T & M Resources Corp Tapioca Pearls, 10) Pure Tea Tapioca Pearls (White), 11) Pure Tea Tapioca Pearls (Black), 12) Full Free Green Tea Tapioca Ball, 13) Full Free Yam Tapioca Ball, 14) Long Kow Vegetarian Instant Rice Noodle, 15) Long Kow Rice Noodle with Thick Soup.
The FDA said that the ban shall remain in force and in effect until the time these products are registered in the country by an FDA licensed-food establishment with proper testing of presence/absence of maleic acid to the said products.
It cited pertinent provisions of Republic Act 7394 and Republic Act 9711 which prohibits the importation and sale of any health product that is "adulterated, unregistered or misbranded, products contaminated with maleic acid are considered illegal."
The FDA advised consumers to buy products that are registered with the FDA, under Consumers Corner, in its website: www.fda.gov.ph
