Here and There

Savar Building Collapse

On 24th April 2013, a commercial building named Rana Plaza collapsed in Savar, a sub-district near Dhaka, the Bangladesh capital. With death-toll over 500, this collapse is considered to be Bangladesh's worst-ever industrial casualty.

News media reported that, inspectors and engineers from Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology (BUET) discovered cracks in the building the day before the collapse and requested everyone to evacuate and close down everything within the building. The shops and the BRAC bank closed immediately that day but garment workers were forced to return the following day since the garment managers threatened to withhold the payments of workers who refused to come to work.

The eight-story building all of a sudden collapsed at around 9 in the morning. A witness described the scene as an earthquake, quick and sudden but with immense damage. Immediately Fire Service and Civil Defense came out to succor the victims of this tragedy. Later the Bangladesh Army reached out their helping hand. Common people from far and near came to rescue the people under the rubble and thus the relief work accelerated. The people found alive were sent to the nearby Enam Medical Hospital for treatment whereas the people dead were sent to a nearby school where they can be kept for family and friends to identify.

As time went on relief team with their incessant efforts brought bodies, both dead and alive from the rubble. Scarcity of blood was seen in the hospital when the death-toll passed 70. As a result Bangladesh Red Crescent Society setup temporary blood donation centers around the place. The civilians who couldn't directly help in the rescue mission donated blood, medicine, clothing and money to minimize the pressure on the hospital. The survivors were later sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.

On 26th April, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered to arrest Sohel Rana, the owner of Rana Plaza as well as the four owners of the garment factories in the building. Security forces arrested the four owners the very day and reported that Sohel Rana is in hiding. After two days on 28th April special forces nabbed Sohel Rana at Benapole, Jessore who was attempting to elope to India through the borders.

The last reported person to be alive in the midst of the debris was Shahina, a women in her late-twenties. Rescue teams tried their best to reach the ground level and save her but all they could recover was her lifeless body. Everyone engaged in the search broke into tears after not being able to save her. Thus the relief work ended with over 500 deaths and over a thousand injured.
