Strained Relations Continue
The Pentagon submitted a new report to Congress this week on North Korea's advances in technology and how the country is closer to its goal of striking the US. The report does not give a timeline for when North Korea will be able to reach the US but it does state that it will "increase the threat it poses to U.S. forces and allies in the region, if it continues testing and devoting scarce regime resources to programs.
Prior to this year, North Korea was considered less of a threat to the United States because of limited launching power. However the two countries engaged in a standoff after North Korea launched a satellite into space in December of 2012. The launch became an important indicator that the country's limited resources were being used to reach its ultimate goal of hitting the US. Tensions rose further when North Korea performed a nuclear test in February of 2013. Sanctions by the United Nations have not deterred the country from future testing.
Despite the recent advances in launch capabilities, both the US and China will not accept North Korea as a'nuclear-armed state'. North Korea has not yet tested a re-entry vehicle for a warhead that can strike a target. But the US and its allies are growing increasingly weary of North Korea's threats and watch for a sign that they have reached there launch capability goals.
