Saliva is your friend
Officials have told parents for many years now to not share utensils with there babies or clean the pacifiers of there babies with there mouths because this could pass harmful germs between the parent and baby, but there is now research which show this to be wrong.
There was a study which was published in the journal pediatrics where scientists showed that parents who sucked on there babies pacifiers in order to clean them got fewer allergies than the children who's parents boiled there pacifiers clean, not only this they also had lower rates of eczema, asthma.
This evidence adds to ever growing facts that exposing your children to a certain amount of germs may in fact benefit them, and that over cleaning may not be as good for your children as most of us think, the idea is that the immune system needs to build up its tolerance to trivial threats from a early age.
There is a old saying "you've got to eat a peck of dirt" but health officials discourage this saying that the mother who sucks the child's pacifier to clean it or shares here spoon when eating could well promote tooth decay by passing on cavity thus causing the bacteria to move from the parents to the child's mouth, New York City health department even started a campaign warning parent of the risk.
In this new study doctors of the University of Gothenburg and other places tracked around one hundred and eighty children from birth, examined on a regularly basis by pediactric allergists whilst the parents of the children kept up diaries keeping a record of food introduction and other significant events.
The results of this research showed that the parents who at least sometimes sucked there child's pacifiers were less prone to develop the conditions mentioned above also blood tests revealed that they had lower levels of a immune cell which is connected with allergies.
Dr Berg of the University of Washington who does salivary research stated that these findings back up exactly what he has be telling his patients for years and that is that saliva is your friend, it is a fact that your saliva contains proteins, electrolytes, enzymes, as well as other beneficial substances, I am sure people will have different opinions on this but Dr Berg says "what it points out very clearly is that we are yet to fully discover the many and varied benefits of saliva".
