New IBO jr. bantamweight boxing world champion is from North Cotabato, Philippines

New boxing champion

With a thundering left hook to the jaw, Filipino boxer from M’lang, North Cotabato, Philippines Edrin Dapudong, 27, crashed South Africa’s pride Gideon Buthelezi, 27, to the canvas, prompting the third man in the ring Robert Byrd to immediately dismiss the bout over and out.

Amidst stunned spectators, Buthelizi’s handlers rushed to his aid. Knowing he had won the title, Dapudong was reported to be overwhelmed with emotions.

With the win and wearing the International Boxing Association junior bantamweight championship belt at the Emperor’s Palace boxing arena in Johannesburg, So. Africa that Sunday morning (Manila Time), Dapudong became the first world boxing champion from his home province, and likewise the first for the Braveheart Boxing Club, which is run by the Piñol brothers.

It was Dapudong’s 28th win and 17th KO against 5 loses, while Buthezi suffered only his third defeat against 13 victories.

Their first encounter

During his first encounter with Buthelizi last November 2012, Dapudong thought that he had already the fight in the bag, especially when he floored Buthelizi for a count of 9 in the ninth round, but he was aghast at the result. Two of the three judges had Buthelizi winning a fight he clearly lost.

Promoter Rodney Berman’s website stated “Bleeding from the nose and badly bruised around the left eye, Buthelezi took a beating. But he got lucky with the judges with only Britain’s Reg Thompson scoring it for Dapudong 114-113.”

The verdict was split decision, a controversial decision, but a win for Buthelezi, the champion then.

Revenge

This time Manny Piñol made it clear to Dapudong that they’re in South Africa, a country known for its hometowndecision. For a boxer to win in this country, the only way is to knock out an opponent. Piñol stressed his points before the fight.

Manny Piñol is Dapudong’s manager and former North Cotabato governor.

It is reported Edrin “The Sting” Dapudong who stands 5 feet, 5 inches tall, trained hard and long for this revenge fight. As a challenger, he was focused on his goal and listened intently to his manager’s instruction. Could it be the reason why he knocked out the champion cold so early in the first round? Or could it be mere coincidence, or providential as Dapudong himself has said during a TV interview that nothing is impossible with God’s help.

Piñol said that Dapudong's victory was a vindication of his questionable defeat in the first meeting. He’s the dream catcher for having snared the dream that they have been chasing all of these years. He will inspire other boys in the Braveheart Boxing Club and guide his teammates in catching their own dreams

Opinions, other info

Noted boxing writer Ronnie Nathanielsz said Dapudong’s spectacular win broke the Philippines’ losing streak in boxing, which befell to boxing icons Manny Pacquiao, Brian Viloria and Nonito Donaire

Angel Heredia, who was a part of Juan Manuel Marquez’ team prior to the Dec. 8 Pacquiao-Marquez 4, had extended help to Dapudong’s nutritional requirements. Piñol is noted to have positively confirmed Heredia’s help.

"Congrats po," Pres. Aquino said in a short text message sent to the Team Dapudong in South Africa shortly after he was informed of the North Cotabato boxer's victory.

Dapudong from Barangay Pag-asa, M'lang, North Cotabato, is now one of the three reigning world boxing champions from the Philippines. The two others are Donnie Nietes and Johnriel Casimiro.

On June 28, another Filipino, Denver Cuello, will travel to Dubai, UAE to challenge the Chinese champion for the WBC Miniflyweight Champion.
